Every day in Mangystau is built around one principle: you should be at the right place at the right time. Our route is timed so that you wake up inside the landscape — sunrise at Airakty, sunset at Bozzhyra, golden hour on the salt flat at Tuzbair.
What makes our format different is how we handle the rest. While most operators spend every evening pitching tents and every morning breaking them down, we run stationary camps at all three key locations along the route. By the time you return from the day's exploration, the camp is already there — wind-resistant inflatable tents with proper camp beds, pillows, and sleeping bags, hot showers, and toilets set up in the middle of the desert.
A well-rested traveler sees more, feels more, and remembers more. That's the logic behind every decision we make on the route.

We'll meet you at Aktau airport or your hotel and head deep into the peninsula, leaving the city behind. The first stop is Zhygylgan — where the edge of the Ustyurt Plateau literally collapsed into the Caspian, creating one of the most dramatic panoramas in Kazakhstan. We descend into the white chalk walls of Kapamsai Canyon for lunch, then spend the afternoon in the cool silence of Shakpak-Ata underground mosque and among the mysterious stone spheres of Torysh valley. By evening, our camp at Airakty is already waiting — dinner under the open sky, and rest after a full day of discovery.

Dawn at Airakty is something else — low light catching the chalk towers and turning them warm gold. After breakfast we make a loop through the desert to Karaman-Ata, an ancient underground mosque carved into the rock, its halls cool and still. Then on to Ybykty Canyon — a narrow stone labyrinth with honeycomb walls unlike anything else on the route. On the way back to camp, we stop at the foot of Sherkala Mountain — a solitary chalk mesa that looks like a yurt from one side and a sleeping lion from the other.

Airakty sunrise · Tuzbair · Sphinx Rock · Far Canyons
We leave Airakty at sunrise and drive to Tuzbair — a vast salt flat that glitters white to the horizon. From the rim we take in the full scale of it, then descend onto the ancient ocean floor. At the base of the chalk cliffs we search for fossilised shark teeth — real remnants of the Tethys Ocean, found with no equipment needed. Lunch in the desert, then an afternoon walk through the far canyons near our camp, finishing in total silence as the sun drops below the plateau.

Tuzbair · Stone Arch · Sunset on the Salt Flat
A slower morning — breakfast in camp, then a deeper exploration of Tuzbair's chalk labyrinth. After lunch we drive to the far end of the plateau where wind has carved a massive stone arch directly into the cliff face. Few travellers make it this far. The evening belongs to the salt flat — sunset on the white surface of the shor, colours shifting from pale gold to deep orange, then dinner back at camp with the stars coming out overhead.

An early alarm is worth it — sunrise on Tuzbair is one of the quietest, most cinematic moments of the whole expedition. After breakfast and camp, we cross the desert into a completely different landscape: the layered caramel hills of Kyzylkup, nicknamed Tiramisu for their colour, and then the striped volcanic silhouette of Bokty Mountain. By afternoon we reach Bozzhyra. Sunset from the upper viewpoints here is the visual peak of the trip — chalk formations dropping hundreds of metres into the ancient ocean floor below.

Day 6

Bozzhyra · Trekking to the Stone Fangs · Return to Aktau
The last morning of the expedition. After breakfast we hike to the main viewpoint at the stone fangs — the most iconic landscape in all of Mangystau. There's time to sit with it, photograph it, and simply feel the scale of a place that took millions of years to become what it is. Then we begin the long drive back — lunch stop in Zhanaozen, and arrival in Aktau by evening. End of expedition.
